God Calls the Church to Unity (1 Corinthians 1)

I. Called to be holy (1 Corinthians 1:1-8)

  1. Set apart by God (1 Corinthians 1:1-3)
  2. Enriched by God’s grace (1 Corinthians 1:4-6; 2 Corinthians 8:7)
  3. Expecting Jesus to return (1 Corinthians 1:7; 1 John 2:28-3:3)
  4. Sustained by God’s faithfulness (1 Corinthians 1:8-9; 1 Corinthians 1:6)

II. Called into fellowship (1 Corinthians 1:10-25)

  1. “Is Christ divided?” (1 Corinthians 1:10-13a; Galatians 1:6-9; Colossians 1:18; Acts 18:24-28; 1 Corinthians 9:5; 1 Corinthians 3:3-8; 1 Corinthians 3:4-6)
  2. “Were you baptised in the name of Paul?” (1 Corinthians 1:13b-17; John 4:1-2; Acts 10:48; Acts 18:8; 1 Corinthians 1:16; 1 Corinthians 16:15-18)
  3. “Was Paul crucified for you?” (1 Corinthians 1:18-25; 1 Corinthians 12:13; 1 Corinthians 1:17-2:16)
    • Some stumble at the Cross (1 Corinthians 1:23a; Psalms 22; Isaiah 53; Luke 24:13-35; 1 Corinthians 1:16, 25)
    • Some laugh at the Cross (1 Corinthians 1:23; Isaiah 29:14; 1 Corinthians 1:19; Acts 17:30)
    • Some believe and experience the power and the wisdom of the Cross (1 Corinthians 1:24; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14)

III. Called to glorify God (1 Corinthians 1:26-31; 1 Corinthians 4:6, 18-19; 1 Corinthians 5:2; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

  1. A reflection of their past (1 Corinthians 1:26)
  2. The purpose of God’s call (1 Corinthians 1:27-29; 1 Corinthians 3:21)
  3. Boast only in Christ’s sufficiency (1 Corinthians 1:30-31; 2 Corinthians 10:17; Colossians 2:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21; John 17:19; Romans 3:24)
